Poetry being primarily an oral art, the contemporary “spoken word” movement is misguided, a reinvention of the wheel in reaction to the pervasive, just as lamentable loss of rhythm & musicality in much of today’s written poetry. It’s as if by embracing the bogus spoken word subgenre, its practitioners feel their poetry is excused from having to work on the page.
